Still Life with Canister is neither opera nor musical theatre. It is a theatre scene with music.
Natalia Gaviola’s music charges the scenic without ever entering direct relationships with the text and its content. It is a propelling force that stimulates the drama of the action whilst sometimes also counteracting it. (Hans-Peter Jahn)
Gaviola’s tonal acuities, with their immanent tension in the clash with the scenic, are accidental because they are not consciously conceived for the respective situation. The degrees of effectiveness of both genres thus play with each other without really knowing each other. The composer and the author have developed their respective material independently of each other, knowing the rough content and structure of the piece as well as the temporal dimensions of individual scenes.
