Musically, Gerald Resch starts with the characterisation of the three persons, whose inflections differ fundamentally. Especially in the almost wordless transformation scenes, the simultaneity of these “tones” and their mutual shifting into and out of each other plays an essential role.
Quarrel at Elfenkönigs (fairy kings). The jealous Oberon drips a magic potion into the eyes of his spouse Titania, which condemns her to falling in love with the first creature she sees after waking up. It is the weaver Zettel, a member of an acting troupe, whom Oberon’s goblin-like servant Puck has transformed into a donkey shortly before for the fun of it. This does not diminish the power of the love spell…
